Digital Misinformation and Deepfakes: Threats and Responses to Democratic Integrity

Keywords : Digital misinformation, deepfakes, generative AI, democracy, political manipulation, media trust, media literacy.

Abstract : Rapid digital technology development has changed the way information is produced, disseminated, and consumed, but it has also made it easier for digital disinformation to proliferate, endangering democratic processes around the globe. Generative deepfakes, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated synthetic media that create realistic-looking but fake audio-visual content, are one of these new threats. They have acquired prominence for their ability to sway public opinion, interfere with elections, and erode institutional trust. With an emphasis on deepfakes, this study investigates the issue of digital disinformation, looking at its technological underpinnings, development, and unique difficulties. It examines the various ways that deepfakes affect democracy, such as how they weaken public confidence, increase political polarisation, and undermine democratic institutions. The study also examines current technology countermeasures and legal and regulatory remedies, stressing the advantages and disadvantages of these strategies. It also talks about moral issues and the difficulties in striking a balance between the need to preserve democratic integrity and the right to free speech. In order for governments, tech companies, civic society, and individuals to work together to address this complicated issue, the report concludes with a thorough list of recommendations. Democracies can better protect the integrity of information ecosystems and uphold public trust in the digital age by combining legislative, technological, and educational approaches.
