Transgender Narratives in Indian Literature: From Marginalization to Empowerment

Keywords : Transgender Representation, Indian Literature, Empowerment and Resilience

Abstract : Transgender identities have been historically marginalised in Indian society, but literature has played a key role in bringing their experiences to light. Over time, transgender narratives in Indian literature have evolved from reinforcing stereotypes to challenging social norms and advocating for inclusion. Autobiographies such as "The Truth About Me" by A. Revathi and "I am Vidya" by Living Smile Vidya offer first-hand accounts of identity, discrimination and self-affirmation. These narratives are intertwined with caste, class and gender, reflecting the socio-political challenges faced by the community. The research explores the evolving representation of transgender individuals in Indian literature through a qualitative research approach using literary analysis and thematic interpretation. A close reading of autobiographies identifies themes of identity, resilience, and empowerment. Comparative analysis of literary works from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds further examines variations in transgender representation. However, transgender experiences are still influenced by the intersections of caste and class, which affect access to education, employment and social acceptance. Despite progress, challenges such as limited mainstream recognition, translation barriers and social prejudice remain. Literature emerges as a powerful tool for social change, promoting empathy and shaping more inclusive narratives, ultimately advocating for transgender rights and representation in Indian society. The study finds that transgender literature in India has significantly evolved, with contemporary works advocating for gender inclusivity and legal recognition. However, transgender experiences are still shaped by intersections of caste and class, influencing access to education, employment, and social acceptance.
