Fear of Judgment as a Major Communication Barrier among Indian Youth: A Review Study

Keywords : Social stigma, psychological factors, self-perceived ability, language anxiety, fear of judgment, and communication barriers.

Abstract : Effective communication is necessary for participation and achievement in a variety of settings, including educational institutions, businesses, healthcare facilities, and social areas. However, psychological, social, cultural, and institutional issues frequently result in communication difficulties for people. The purpose of this study is to investigate how people`s willingness to communicate in various circumstances is influenced by fear of judgment, stigma, self-perceived ability, and language-related anxiety. Based on a descriptive research approach, the study uses secondary data gathered from academic publications, doctorate theses, and peer-reviewed research articles. The results from the body of available literature were combined using a qualitative content analysis. According to the review, communication behaviour is frequently more influenced by subjective beliefs like self-confidence and perceived competence than by real skills. The results also show that while inclusive practices and communication-focused treatments lower obstacles and promote participation, unsupportive institutional contexts exacerbate fear and silence. The study comes to the conclusion that increasing social inclusion, confidence, and participation requires addressing psychological issues and fostering helpful communication contexts.
